All in all we were a bit sluggish in the game, though the guys didn't give up and hung in well late to give us a chance to come back. We have a lot of work ahead of us for next week's game against second ranked Hitchcock-Tulare.
SBA came away with a 40-0 win at Lower Brule on Friday, September 3. After stopping Lower Brule on their first possession and forcing a punt, we turned it back over on a third down run. SBA's first touchdown came in the first quarter after recovering a fumble we finished off a drive with a Cole McClain touchdown run of 6 yards. Laramie Strand ran for the conversion and an 8-0 lead. We scored three times in the second quarter on a 53 yard run by Laramie Strand, a LeRoy Evans 22 yard pass reception, and a 15 yard run by D.J. Beckwith as time expired in the half. Cole McClain had a conversion run after Evans' touchdown, so we were up 28-0 at half. Laramie Strand scored twice in the second half with runs of 1 and 21 yards. The JV guys played out the last couple minutes of the third quarter and the entire fourth quarter. You will find the game stats here.
The week of practice was a bit rocky due to working in some guys that have not been getting a lot of repetitions at certain positions, and we were also missing Jake Moreland. The game was a bit of a reflection of that, with some mistakes. On the positive side, the offensive line got some good push and there were some great efforts on both sides of the ball. The defense forced six turnovers, which made a difference in the game. The JV guys did a great job in holding the Lower Brule offense scoreless, making a big stand at the end of the game. It was a great way to cap off the day, which also happened to be Mr. Pedersen's 50th birthday; happy birthday Mr. P!
I will post some video when it is ready to go; it might be Monday. Have a great Labor Day weekend and do not forget to thank our Savior for His goodness and grace to us.
Temperatures were in the 90s and the wind was about 25-30 MPH from the south, so conditions were challenging for both teams in the Sanborn Central game. Sanborn deferred after winning the coin toss, so SBA received. We finished a 12 play 47 yard drive with a Jake Moreland two yard touchdown run. Laramie Strand tacked on the extra point for a 7-0 lead. After forcing a punt, Sanborn Central took advantage of a punt return muff and scored in the second quarter. The Crusader defense turned back the conversion and held a one point lead. A late drive stalled for SBA just before half, so we headed to the locker room with a 7-6 lead. A scoreless third quarter was highlighted by solid defensive stands and a key fumble recovery by LeRoy Evans at the SBA two yard line when it looked like SC might score a go-ahead touchdown. Jake Moreland scored on a touchdown run of 28 yards with 5:39 to go in the game and Larmie Strand added the extra point for a 14-6 advantage. The defense held and forced a turnover on downs with 2:36 to go in the game. Jake Moreland broke a first down run for his third touchdown on the day, this time from 30 yards. After a muffed snap on the extra point, the Crusaders held a 20-6 lead. After a final defensive stand, we ran out the clock for a 20-6 win. Jake Moreland finished the day with 210 yards on 24 carries and LeRoy Evans had 22 total tackles on the day. You may see the game stats here.
The offensive line played well despite some guys having been juggled around a bit. We made some mistakes that need to be addressed, but all in all I was pleased with the performance and especially the effort shown on the field. The defense hung in well and made some big stops despite some new starters or guys playing positions that are new to them. We will prepare for Lower Brule next week; hope to see you there. GAME STATS
